  • 1 small yellow onion

  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons Italian dried herb seasoning or 1 tsp basil and 1 tsp oregano

Instructions

Prepare Ingredients

  • Finely chop onion and garlic

Cooking Instructions

  • Pour the olive oil in a 10-12 inch skillet, add the chopped onion and garlic and sauté on medium high heat for a couple of minutes until onion is translucent and tender.
  • Add the canned ground tomatoes, salt, pepper and herbs and cook for 30 minutes. See notes to decide if you want to cover it with a lid or not.
  • Serve

Notes

If you want a thinner sauce, cover the marinara sauce while cooking. If you want a thick sauce, leave the cover off. A thinner sauce is better when you are using it in a parmesan dish because the sauce is easier to spread and will go further.
You can use fresh herbs instead of dried, but adjust the amounts. For more information on that, we have written a couple of paragraphs in our text about using fresh herbs vs dried herbs.
